Service Areas
Flood + Stream Management Program Development
WSD can help develop a sound framework and structure for new and existing flood and stream management or monitoring programs. From high-level planning and prioritization to identifying scientific protocols that will provide actionable data and information we can assist you in creating, revising, and executing your stream management programs in a way that efficiently serves your organization, community, and the stream systems.
Fluvial Hazard Zone Mapping + Mitigation
Hazards associated with rivers and flooding go far beyond the water extents shown on FEMA floodplain maps. From erosion and deposition to avulsions and alluvial fans, as well as understanding the implications of a wildfire on your creek system, we can help you understand what hazards exist and what areas are vulnerable to each hazard.
Disaster Response + Recovery
A primary service that WSD provides is technical and programmatic assistance during flood response and long-term recovery. When SHTF and your organization needs support with decision-making, leadership, outreach, or capacity, we can help.
Stream and Floodplain Design + Engineering
WSD's expertise in stream design and engineering is built on a foundation of geomorphic understanding. To us, designing a good river, drainage, or flood mitigation project begins with geomorphology and ecology. Natural river function is never an afterthought; it is always our primary focus and our projects are better because of that.
Project Review + Value Engineering
WSD can provide in-depth technical perspectives and peer reviews for river, flood, restoration and drainage projects. We understand the direction river management is going and can help each project we review move towards contemporary and innovative science, technology, and management practices as well as more cost-effective solutions.
Watershed + Stream Management Planning
WSD can lead or assist in a variety of planning efforts related to stream corridor function including stream management plans. riparian and floodplain habitat or suitability assessments, sediment transport studies, hazard mitigation plans, master plans, and resiliency plans.
Field Education
We spend a lot of time outdoors and whenever we are out, we are constantly talking about the natural and human processes that created the landscapes and rivers we enjoy. If you are planning a corporate outdoor activity (board retreat, team building, fundraiser, etc.) and/or recreational excursion (float trip, hike, ski day, etc.) and would like an expert to provide an interactive educational experience to your group about how the landscape was created and how it is changing or explain things like the physics behind the rapids and holes on rivers, let us know, we’d be happy to come along!
